Amani Abeid Karume (born November 1, 1948 ) is a Tanzanian politician. He was president of the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar from 2000 to 2010. He is the son of Zanzibar's first president, Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume . He belongs to the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party .

Life

Karume attended Lumumba Secondary School until 1969 and was trained as an accountant. Since 1990 he has held various positions in government, including Minister of Finance.

In October 2000 Karume was elected President of Zanzibar with 67.04 percent. On October 30, 2005, he was re-elected with 53.18 percent. Irregularities were criticized in both elections.

In 2009 he initiated a dialogue between the CCM and the opposition party CUF , which in mid-2010 resulted in a government of national unity. After the victory of his CCM party in the internationally monitored and free elections in November 2010, he handed over his office to his successor Ali Mohammed Shein .

Amani Abeid Karume has six children and is fluent in English and Swahili .
