Amazon Fund for Forest and Climate Protection

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Amazon Fund for Forest and Climate Protection , Portuguese Fundo Amazônia , English Amazon Fund , was founded in 2008 by the government of Brazil with the aim of stopping the further destruction of the forests in the Amazon region through the reforestation of the rainforest and the protection of biodiversity. It runs from 2010 to 2021. The Brazilian executing agency is the Brazilian Development Bank ( Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social , BNDES). The total budget is around 1.3 billion US dollars. The main donor with US $ 1.2 billion is Norway . In addition, Germany and France are also involved with around 35 million US dollars (via KfW ) .

Since the inauguration of the government of President Jair Bolsonaro , which has been in office since January 1, 2019 , there has been a large increase in forest fires in the Amazon rainforest ; Bolsonaro, who is supposed to support illegal deforestation indirectly and directly, is at the center of international criticism. In July 2019 alone, 2,254 square kilometers of rainforest were cleared; this is almost four times as much as in the same month of 2018 and corresponds to the deforestation of three football fields of rainforest per minute. As a result, Norway and Germany stopped their payments in August 2019.
