Kenny Government 2
The Kenny 2 government was the 30th government of the Republic of Ireland , serving from May 6, 2016 to June 14, 2017.
In the parliamentary elections on February 26, 2016 , the governing parties Fine Gael (FG) and Labor Party (ILP) lost their majority. Fine Gail lost 26 seats, but remained the strongest party with 50 seats. Labor lost 30 seats and only had 7 MPs.
At the first parliamentary session, none of the candidates ( Enda Kenny (FG), Micheál Martin ( Fianna Fáil ), Gerry Adams ( Sinn Féin ) and Richard Boyd Barrett ( People Before Profit )) won a majority. Kenny thereupon announced his resignation and remains provisionally in office until a successor government is elected. The next attempt to elect a head of government failed on April 6th. Enda Kenny, Micheál Martin and Ruth Coppinger (People Before Profit) missed a majority. At the third attempt on April 14th, only Kenny and Martin competed, but again could not win a majority.
It was not until the fourth attempt on May 6, 2016 that Enda Kenny was elected head of a minority government made up of Fine Gael and some independents with the votes of 9 independents and thanks to the abstention of Fianna Fáil with 59 to 49 votes. The Prime Minister and his ministers were appointed by President Michael D. Higgins on the same day . The Minister of State was appointed on May 17th.
Kenny announced his resignation in May 2017 because of his role in a bullying campaign against an Irish police whistleblower. Leo Varadkar was elected party leader of Fine Gael on June 2nd and Taoiseach (head of government) on June 14th .
