Costello government 1
The Costello 1 government was the 5th government of the Republic of Ireland , in office from February 18, 1948 to May 7, 1951.
Fianna Fáil , ruling since 1932, lost 8 seats in the parliamentary elections on February 4, 1948 , but remained the strongest party. A grand coalition was formed from Fine Gael (FG), Labor Party (ILP), National Labor Party (NLP), Clann na Poblachta (CnP) and Clann na Talmhan (CnT). Since several coalition partners rejected Richard Mulcahy , the chairman of Fine Gael, as head of government, John A. Costello (FG ) was elected Taoiseach (Prime Minister) on February 18, 1948 with 75 against 68 votes by the Dáil Éireann (Lower House of the Irish Parliament) . The Taoiseach, its ministers and the head of government-nominated state secretaries were appointed by President Seán Ó Ceallaigh on the same day .
Following the resignation of Health Minister Noel Browne, some government MPs withdrew their support. This led to early parliamentary elections on May 30, 1951 . Fianna Fáil was again the strongest party and formed the next government with the support of some independents.
