Government of WT Cosgrave 2
The WT Cosgrave 2 government was the first Executive Council of the Irish Free State , serving from December 6, 1922 to September 21, 1923.
With the entry into force of the Anglo-Irish Treaty on December 6, 1922, the Irish Free State was created . The Executive Council replaced the two previous governments, the Ministry of the Dáil of the Irish Republic and the Provisional Government of Southern Ireland .
The Dáil , the Irish Parliament, elected William Thomas Cosgrave as President of the Executive Council on December 6, 1922 . Cosgrave, headed the two previous governments as President of the Dáil and Chairman of the Provisional Government . The ministers were elected on the same day. On December 14th, three more ministers were appointed, but they did not belong to the government council.
When the government took office, Sinn Féin , which won 96 of the 128 seats in the parliamentary elections on June 16, 1922 , was split into supporters and opponents of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, and a civil war between supporters and opponents of the treaty had raged in the country since June 1922 . The proponents of the treaty who made up the government council decided to found their own party, Cumann na nGaedheal (CG), which was founded in April 1923.
The civil war ended in May 1923, the Dáil dissolved on August 9, 1923. In the parliamentary elections on August 27, 1923 Cumann na nGaedheal was the strongest party and continued to provide government.
