Ahern government 3
The Ahern 3 government was the 27th government of the Republic of Ireland , in office from June 14, 2007 to May 7, 2008.
In the parliamentary elections on May 24, 2007 , the coalition of Fianna Fáil (FF) and Progressive Democrats (PD) , which had ruled together since 2003, lost their majority. Fianna Fáil won 78 seats, the Progressive Democrats only got 2 seats. Both parties formed a coalition with the Greens (GP), who had 6 MPs.
Bertie Ahern was re-elected Taoiseach (Prime Minister) on June 14, 2007 by the Dáil Éireann , the Irish Parliament, with 89 to 76 votes . The appointment of Ahern and the ministers by President Mary McAleese took place on the same day. The two ministers of state at the Taoiseach were appointed on June 14, the other ministers of state on June 20. Following a change in the law that increased the number of ministers of state from 17 to 20, another three ministers of state were appointed on July 9th.
On April 2nd, 2008 Ahern announced his resignation on May 6th. Fianna Fáil elected Treasury Secretary Brian Cowen as the new party leader on April 9 (took office May 6). Ahern's resignation as head of government took place on May 6th, and Finance Minister Cowen was elected the next day by the Dáil as the new head of government.
