Tom Kitt ( Irish Tomás Ó Ceit , born July 11, 1952 in Galway , County Galway ) is an Irish politician ( Fianna Fáil ) and has been a member of the Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish Parliament , since 1987 .

Kitt attended St Jarlath's College in Tuam and St Patrick's Teachers Training College in Drumcondra , a suburb of Dublin . He later became a teacher.

From 1979 to 1990 he was a member of Dublin County Council . In 1987 he was in the constituencies Dublin South first elected for Fianna Fáil in Dáil Éireann. As a member of parliament, he held several posts as Minister of State and was Government Chief Whip from September 29, 2004 to May 6, 2008 . In the 2011 elections for the 31st Dáil Éireann, he did not run.

Kitt is married and has four children, three sons and a daughter. His father is the Irish politician Michael F. Kitt . His sister Áine Brady and his brother Michael P. Kitt are also members of the Dáil Éireann.

In addition to politics, Kitt is an avid marathon runner. Among other things, he took part in five Dublin marathons , as well as the Berlin Marathon in 1991 , the Belfast Marathon in 1996 and the 100th Boston Marathon that same year .
