The orchid Ambrella longituba is the only species in the genus Ambrella . The small, epiphytic growing plants were found only a few times in a small area in northern Madagascar.

description

Ambrella longituba has a monopodially growing, compressed stem axis . In the lower area there are the roots covered by velamen . The leaves sit in two rows on the shoot and are separated from this by a separating fabric. The leaf base encompasses the shoot in such a way that it is completely covered by the leaf bases. The shape of the leaves is oblong-oval to inverted-ovoid, narrowed at the base. The tip of the leaf is slightly drawn in so that two lobes are created. The leaves measure five to nine inches in length by about two inches in width.

The flowers stand individually or in pairs or threes together on approximately five to six centimeters long inflorescences . The flower color is green, the flower is 4.5 centimeters long in relation to the rest of the plant. The petals are not fused together. The sepals and petals are similar in shape and size, they are narrowly lanceolate and pointed, they are not spread out, but point forward. The lip forms a tube around the column , in the front area it is spread out and three-lobed. A 3.5 centimeter long spur attaches to the base of the lip. The inside of the lip is softly hairy.

distribution

Ambrella longituba was found by Henri Perrier de la Bâthie in northern Madagascar, on the Montagne Ambre near the Maky River. It grew there epiphytically on Calliandra alternans at an altitude of 800 meters . Stewart writes that this is the only known find, but the Missouri Botanical Garden database lists another specimen collected in 1992.

Systematics and botanical history

After Perrier de la Bâthie had collected the plant in 1932, he published the first description in 1934 . He chose the Latinized name of the site as the generic name. The species name longituba , "long-tube", refers to the shape of the flowers.

The species belongs to the tribe Vandeae and there in the subtribe Angraecinae .
