Amda Seyon II.

Actually Endreyas ( Ethiop. አንድሬያስ, also called Andreas ; throne name Amda Seyon II. ዓምደ ጽዮን; * around 1490 ; † October 26, 1494 ) was Negus Negest ( Emperor ) of Ethiopia for a few months in 1494 .

He was the son of the Emperor Eskandar and the second wife of his grandfather Beyde Maryam I . Endreyas came from the ruling Solomonic dynasty .

After the murder of his father in the spring of 1494, a civil war broke out between the three power groups in Ethiopia over the succession to the throne . Endreyas was the favorite of the regent Bitwoded Amda Mikael . This was able to prevail in the course of the disputes against the groups around the imperial princes Na'od and Enqo Israel , both brothers of Emperor Eskandar, and in June 1494 Endreyas sat on the Ethiopian imperial throne under the name Amda Seyon . As regent of the child on the throne, Amda Mikael exercised practically unrestricted rule over Ethiopia. However, Endreyas only stayed on the imperial throne for seven months. The young emperor died suddenly and unexpectedly on October 26, 1494.

Presumably with the support of the provincial rulers, Na'od, who had previously been defeated in the battle for the imperial crown, was proclaimed the new emperor.

Since he sat on the throne as a child and only for a very short time, Endreyas was one of the least important emperors of Ethiopia. In the lists of rulers he is usually listed under his throne name Amda Seyon II.

Taddesse Tamrat writes: " Amda-Seyon's reign lasted for only six months, and even the hagiographer betrays a sense of great relief at the announcement of his death ." 1

" Amda Seyon's reign lasted only six months, and even the hagiographers suggest great relief at the announcement of his death. "

Due to the complicated transcription from Amharic, the spelling of Ethiopian proper names can be different in different publications.
