The American Falls are one of the three waterfalls collectively known as Niagara Falls .
They form the northernmost and easternmost of the three falls between the mainland of the town of Niagara Falls in the US state - New York and the island of Luna Island . This means that they - like the Bridal Veil Falls , which are only a few meters away - are entirely in the United States .
The American Falls is the second greatest width of the three Falls. This is 250 meters as the crow flies from bank to bank, while another 40 meters are added if you measure the exact course of the edge. Depending on the location, their height is between 21 and 34 meters until the water hits a dump of rubble . If you include the height of the rubble dump, the American Falls reach a height of 57 meters. The rubble heap is probably the reason that - unlike the Horseshoe Falls - no one has survived a fall from the American Falls.
All three falls are fed by the Niagara River , which flows from Lake Erie into Lake Ontario . Only around ten percent of the water flows through the American Falls.
