The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (short AIAA ) is the US-based professional association for aviation and space technology . The AIAA has around 35,000 members worldwide, the majority of which are American citizens.

history

The association was founded in 1963. This is not actually a start-up, but rather a merger of the predecessor organizations American Rocket Society (ARS) , American Interplanetary Society (AIS) and Institute of Aerospace Sciences (IAS) , which were founded in the early 1930s.

activity

The association is a member of the International Astronautical Federation and cooperates with other associations in the field of aerospace, such as the German Aerospace Society . The AIAA Foundation also awards scholarships to students. The AIAA's work is geographically divided into seven regions (north-east, south-east, central, south-central, mid-west, west and international).

The association has been awarding the “Wyld Propulsion Award” since 1964 (until 1975 under the name “James H. Wyld Propulsion Award”) for outstanding achievements in the development or application of rocket propulsion systems.

The association has been organizing the International Conference on Environmental Systems (ICES for short; before 1990: Intersociety Conference on Environmental Systems), an annual conference , since 2010 .

Publications

The association is the publisher of several specialist journals with peer-reviewed articles:

  • AIAA Journal
  • Journal of Aerospace Computing, Information, and Communication
  • Journal of Aircraft
  • Journal of Energy
  • Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics
  • Journal of Hydronautics
  • Journal of Propulsion and Power
  • Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets
  • Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer

Conferences

The AIAA holds several conferences on aerospace issues in different countries. One of the largest AIAA conferences is the AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit , which takes place annually in January .
