Hans Otto Erdmann (born December 18, 1896 in Insterburg ; † September 4, 1944 in Berlin-Plötzensee ) was a career officer and resistance fighter from July 20, 1944 .

Life

In 1944, Lieutenant Colonel Erdmann was the 1st General Staff Officer in Military District I ( Königsberg ) . Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg let Erdmann in on the plans to overthrow Adolf Hitler so that he would carry out the orders of the Valkyrie company in the military district. Roland von Hößlin , who was also inaugurated and commander of a tank reconnaissance training department in Insterburg, was available for security tasks . However, on July 20, 1944, the conspirators' orders were not issued until Hitler's survival of the assassination attempt was known. Therefore, the elimination of National Socialist agencies and office holders was no longer possible.

Stauffenberg wanted to speak to Thadden first and then to Kandt, but both refused, and so Stauffenberg spoke to Erdmann. Erdmann could only tell him that Hitler had survived and that nothing could happen in Wehrkreis I.

Erdmann's arrest by the Gestapo followed on August 14, and the hearing before the People's Court under its President Roland Freisler took place on September 4, 1944 . On the same day Hans Otto Erdmann was sentenced to death and hanged in Plötzensee .

In August 1944 a bomb attack on Königsberg destroyed many houses on Crantzer Allee with officers' apartments. He had lived there with his family, who went into hiding immediately after the arrest and survived the attack.
