The American masked red-toothed shrew ( Sorex cinereus ) is a species from the genus of the red -toothed shrew . In contrast to the Eurasian red-toothed shrew, it is a Nearctic species and is considered the most common of its genus in the Nearctic . Their occurrence ranges from the west coast of Alaska, the Aleutian Islands and the Brooks Range to the southern coast of the Hudson Bay . Its distribution area includes regions that are partially north of the Arctic Circle. It is one of the few insectivores that belong to the fauna of the Arctic . Unlike the closely related Sorex ugyunak , their habitat is primarily the boreal forests.
The body length of this shrew, including the tail, is between 75 and 125 millimeters. Their weight is between 2.5 and 5.5 grams. The top of the body is brown to gray-brown. The underside of the body is a little lighter.
