Amherst Island is an island belonging to Canada in the north of Lake Ontario . It is south of Kingston . It has an area of 70 km². Its length is 16.5 km, its maximum width 7 km. The island is part of the Loyalist Township in Lennox and Addington Counties in Ontario . The two main towns on Amherst Island are Stella and Emerald .
Amherst Island is only accessible by air or water. A ferry service connects Stella with Millhaven , located in mainland Ontario . The ferry M / V Frontenac II runs 365 days a year and takes 15 minutes for the crossing.
The island population is around 450 people. It doubles in the summer months. About 500 white-tailed deer live on the island . Snow owls visit the island regularly in winter . Long -eared owls and great horned owls can be found here in summer .
Amherst Island was called "Isle Tonti" by the French, after Henri de Tonti , who accompanied Robert Cavelier de La Salle on his expeditions. The island was later settled by the United Empire Loyalists , who renamed it "Amherst Island" in 1792 in honor of Jeffrey Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst , commander of British troops in North America.
Agriculture is practiced on Amherst Island , especially sheep breeding .
The island's climate features moderately warm summers and cold winters.
