The Amirkabir University of Technology ( AUT ) (Persian: دانشگاه صنعتی امیرکبیر Dāneŝgāhe Sannatiye Amirkabir), formerly called Tehran Polytechnic , is a public research university based in Tehran , Iran.

The AUT was the first technical university founded in Iran. In Iran it is called the "mother of technical universities". University admission is competitive, and access to undergraduate and postgraduate courses requires being among the top 1% of students on the nationwide university entrance exams known as Konkour .

The university was founded as a standard academy in 1928 and developed into a technical university by Habib Nafisi in 1956, which was then expanded by Mohammad Ali Mojtahedi during the Pahlavi dynasty . The Polytechnic in Tehran began with five technical faculties. Six months before the victory of the Iranian Revolution in 1979, the Tehran Polytechnic was renamed after the Iranian Prime Minister Amir Kabir (1807-1852).

Subsidiaries in Garmsar , Bandar Abbas and Mahshahr are affiliated with it. Around 9100 students are enrolled in the basic and postgraduate courses. AUT has 480 full-time academic faculty members and 550 administrative staff, making it the highest student-to-student ratio of any university in the country. The executive branch consists of four departments, which are involved in planning and administration by the councils.

The AUT has signed agreements on cooperation in research and education with international universities. There is a joint program between AUT and Birmingham University .

The AUT is one of the leading universities in the field of e-learning systems in Iran, which started its activities in 2004. AUT is the pioneer of sustainable development in Iran and set up a sustainability office in 2011. The activities of this office include: a. the AUT campus by reducing energy consumption, costs and emissions, and also offer student coursework, student volunteering and academic activities in research and teaching on sustainable development.
