butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 36 to 44 millimeters. The basal region of the upper fore wing shows a light gray to ash gray color. The middle field, bordered by light transverse lines, stands out clearly in dark brown to reddish brown tones. The color of the post-disk region and the submarginal region correspond approximately to the basal region, but sometimes show a weak pink over-dusting. Kidney and ring flaws are large, mostly filled in light gray and have a thin border. The hind wings are gray-white in color, somewhat darkened towards the outer edge.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are pale reddish brown in color and show an indistinct dark back line and a narrow yellowish side line.

Similar species

Butterflies of the sister species Ammoconia reisseri Ronkay & Varga, 1984 the dark middle field on the upper side of the forewing is missing. Since A. reisseri occurs only in Crete and in the southern part of the Peloponnese , there is no geographical overlap with the Ammoconia aholai native to Cyprus . Ammoconia anonyma Ronkay & Varga, 1984 shows a darkened midfield, but is also not represented in Cyprus.

distribution and habitat

Ammoconia aholai occurs isolated on Cyprus. The animals are mainly found on warm slopes or on dry grasslands.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation in autumn. At night they visit artificial light sources and baits . Little is known about other lifestyle habits and details of the first booths at the moment. For the species of the genus Ammoconia occurring in Europe and in the eastern Mediterranean , the egg is given as the wintering stage.
