Amor Prohibido ( Spanish for Forbidden Love ) is a song that was created in collaboration between the singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez , her brother AB Quintanilla and Pete Astudillo, a former member of Selena's backing band Los Dinos . The title track from Selena's album of the same name, Amor Prohibido , took first place in the Billboard Hot Latin Songs nine times in 1994 and stayed in the charts for 20 weeks .

The song is based on a true story about the love affair between a son from a wealthy family and a servant of his family from a poor background. The song addresses the love between the different social classes ( Amor prohibido murmuran por las calles porque somos de distintas sociedades ; dt. Forbidden love, so it whispers in the streets, because we are from different classes ), but through the power love is overcome ( Aunque soy pobre todo esto que te doy, vale más que el dinero porque sí es amor ; dt. Although I am poor, everything I give you is worth more than money because it is love ). The story is based on the love affair between Selena Quintanilla's grandmother from Nueva Rosita , Coahuila , Mexico , and her grandfather.
