Amparo Acker-Palmer

Maria Amparo Acker-Palmer (born September 10, 1968 in Sueca , Valencia Province ) is a Spanish neuroscientist and cell biologist who is a professor at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Acker-Palmer studied biology and biochemistry at the University of Valencia from 1986, completing his doctorate in 1996 under Erwin Knecht . As a post-doctoral student , she worked at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg in the developmental biology department of Angel Nebreda and Rüdiger Klein , whom she followed in 2001 as a junior research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology in Munich. In 2007 she became a professor in Frankfurt (with a full professorship since 2011). There she heads the Department of Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology at the Institute for Cell Biology and Neuroscience. She is also a senior scientist in the newly founded Rhine-Main-Neuroscience Network (2012).

She has been in the Macromolecular Complexes Excellence Cluster of the DFG since 2009 and is part of the Translational Neuroscience Research Association .

Acker-Palmer studies the molecular basis of synaptic plasticity and development of the nervous system. In particular, she investigated the Ephrin-B receptors and found parallels between the development of the structure of the nervous system and that of blood vessels (angiogenesis). The latter has applications in the study of metastasis in tumors. Both the nervous system and the blood vessel system use similar molecules and common genes.

In 2010 she received the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize for young scientists. In 2012 she became a member of the Leopoldina . In 2014 she was elected to the Academia Europaea and in 2015 to the European Molecular Biology Organization .

She is married to the neuropathologist and neuro-oncologist Till Acker, with whom she has two daughters. She worked with him on tumor therapy (for example glioblastomas ), which attacks angiogenesis (anti-angiogenetic tumor therapy).
