Amphipyra stix is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

With a wingspan of 29 to 35 millimeters, the moths are one of the smaller amphipyra species . The upper side of the forewing has a dark gray to anthracite brown color. The submarginal region is colored yellow-gray to white-gray. Cross lines are missing. Ring and kidney defects are reduced to small black dots or are absent. The upper side of the hind wing is white-gray without drawing, slightly darkened at the edge.
Similar species
- With a wing span of 44 to 54 millimeters, the lined shining owl ( Amphipyra perflua ), which is much larger, has a wider and stronger yellow submarginal region.
- The three-point shining owl ( Amphipyra tragopoginis ) shows clear, black, point-like blemishes. It has an overall gray-brown to reddish gray basic color without a lightened submarginal region.
distribution and habitat
Amphipyra stix occurs in Europe on the Balkan Peninsula . Outside Europe, the species can be found in Turkey , Iran, and Lebanon, as well as in Armenia and Israel . The main habitat is open, rocky terrain.
Way of life
The moths form a generation a year that flies from June to August. They are nocturnal, fly to artificial light sources , but also like to visit bait .
