Preparation of a lined shining owl

The lined shining owl ( Amphipyra perflua ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 44 to 54 millimeters. The forewings are dark brown, the root field light brown. The wide outer edge is colored yellow-brown with small black arrows on the wavy line, which clearly distinguishes the butterfly from the related pyramid owl ( Amphipyra pyramidea ). The transverse lines are double-serrated, the ring flaws are very small and have a light border, the kidney flaws are covered by the dark brown central field. The hind wings are gray-brown almost without drawing.

The eggs are spherical with a strongly flattened base. They have slightly wavy, strong longitudinal ribs. The eggs are initially yellowish, later yellowish-gray.

The caterpillars have a dull light green color with a white back line and green and white side stripes that are broken up into dots. On the 11th segment there is a pyramidal hump with broad, yellowish lines running downwards.

The pupa is yellow-brown with a few bristles on the cremaster (protrusion provided with thorns at the end of the abdomen).

Geographical distribution and habitat

The occurrence in Germany mainly affects the south, where the species is found sporadically in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg , but also in Thuringia . It prefers mountainous areas and climbs up to 1500 meters in the Alps .

Way of life

The Lined Shiny Owl forms a generation a year that flies from mid-July to early September. The moths are nocturnal, fly to artificial light sources , but are also very keen visitors to bait . The caterpillars can be found from April to June. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various deciduous trees and shrubs, such as. B. hawthorn , aspen , willow , poplar , elm , hazel , sloe and apple . In some areas, privet and honeysuckle are preferred. The species overwinters as an egg.
