( Fabricius , 1781) |
Amphotis marginata is a beetle from the family of the gloss beetles (Nitidulidae).
features
The rust-red colored beetles are 3.8-5.8 mm long. They are easily recognizable by their greatly enlarged first antennae . Pronotum and elytra have a wide margin. The middle of the pronotum and the elytra are colored brown to brown-black. Five longitudinal ribs run over the wing covers.
distribution
Amphotis marginata is the only representative of the genus Amphotis in Central Europe. The species is widespread in Europe. Except for the far north, the species occurs everywhere in Europe. In Central Europe, their frequency increases towards the south.
Way of life
The myrmecophilic beetles are often found in forests and on forest edges near nests of the glossy black wood ant ( Lasius fuliginosus ). The beetles are usually seen from mid-May to mid-June. During this time pairing and migration to new locations takes place. The beetles are food parasites of Lasius fuliginosus . They watch the workers on their way back and “beg” for food. In doing so, they imitate their signals.
