Amritlal B. Shah

Amritlal Bhikhabhai Shah (* 1920 ; † 1981 ) was an Indian civil rights activist. He was the founder of the secular - humanistic Indian Secular Society .

Life

Shah's family belonged to Jainism . However, he came into contact with atheism early on . Through the writings of Ernst Haeckel , he came to the conclusion that not only God but also the soul does not exist. Other influences came from Manabendra Nath Roy . He dealt with Islam through Hamid Dalwai and together with him founded the reform-oriented Muslim organization Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal . So he paid great attention to the problems of Indian Muslims. He edited Jayaprakash Narayan's prison diaries. Shah was editor of The Secularist magazine until his death .
