The office of Böckelheim had been an Electoral Mainz office since 1281 , which was established after Archbishop Werner von Eppstein bought Böckelheim Castle in 1278.

The office consisted of Böckelheim Castle and the town of Sobernheim .

In 1466 Archbishop Adolf von Nassau sold the castle and the associated places to Count Palatine Ludwig I , who had to cede it to Elector Friedrich I in 1471 .

Böckelheim remained an Electoral Palatinate office until 1798 .
