Landshut District and Regional Court Prison (front building facing Innere Münchener Strasse)

The district and regional court prison in Landshut , a town in Lower Bavaria , was built between 1905 and 1907. The former prison at Innere Münchener Straße 2 has been a protected architectural monument since 2012 . The building was used as a correctional facility until 2008 and was replaced by the new Landshut correctional facility .

history

The building is located within the old town ensemble, directly at the southern end of the old town. It was built in front of the former Munich Gate. The new building according to the plans of the Landshut agricultural department replaced the old prison in Spiegelgasse. Until the second half of the 20th century, the prison was a judicial prison for the execution of pre-trial detention and shorter sentences.

architecture

The symmetrical three-wing building with a two-storey middle section and five-storey cell wings is covered by hipped roofs and has a round corner tower. The plastered brick buildings are surrounded by a circular wall made of bricks, the blind arches of which were originally open and provided with bars. The inner courtyards served as a work and walking courtyard. The work hall closes off the area on the fourth side. The administration and kitchen rooms as well as the doctors' and sick rooms were located in the front building facing the Innere Münchener Strasse. The chapel was also housed here. The prison building, which was modern for the time, offered space for 180 prisoners, who were initially looked after by nine employees. The prison building met the requirements of hygienic and humane accommodation for prisoners at the time.
