Amundsen is an impact crater on the front of the Moon near the South Pole, southeast of Scott crater and north of Faustini . The relatively young crater has pronounced terracing at the edge , the interior is largely flat with a central mountain .
The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1964 after the Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen .
