Aníbal López

Aníbal López (born April 13, 1964 in Guatemala City , † September 26, 2014 there ) was a Guatemalan photographer , video artist and actionist .

life and work

Since the 1990s, Aníbal López's practice has moved further and further away from figurative painting, photography and video art towards actions that combine street art , performance , minimalism , conceptual art and activism .

Since 1997 López has signed many of his art actions with the pseudonym / code name A-1 53167 (this is the number of his Guatemalan ID). In 2001 López showed the photographic series 30 de Junio at the 49th Venice Biennale . He poured out 10 sacks of coal on a street through which a military parade was taking place a few hours later . For the Testimonio project at dOCUMENTA (13) , he invited a Guatemalan Sicario , a contract killer , to talk to him about the political situation in Central America. A video and black and white photographs with which López documented the encounter were exhibited.
