Aníbal de Peña

Aníbal de Peña (born May 11, 1933 in Barahona ) is a Dominican singer, pianist and composer.

De Peña was a student of Fellito Martínez and composed his first song at the age of twelve; Muchachita de mi Pueblo is considered to be his first professional work . His breakthrough as a musician came when he took second place in a competition by La Voz Dominicana under the direction of Petán Trujillo . He opposed Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship and was sent to prison for it.

He later became famous as a singer in his home country, but also in Puerto Rico, Venezuela and the USA. His first record Mi Debilidad (with the B-side Tu No Tienes La Culpa ) with violinist Aris Bueso was an immediate success; Mi Debilidad was later recorded by Blanca Rosa Gil , Felipe Pirela , Daniel Santos and Niní Cáffaro , among others . In 1966 he released the LP Los Diplomaticos on the Kubaney label . He recorded another LP with Rafael Solano . He also had international success with titles such as Déjame Beber , Virgen Negra , Muchachita de mi Pueblo and Egoísmo .

De Peña wrote the text and composition of the hymn Constitucionalista to the participants in the revolt of April 1965, composed the hymn of the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano based on the text by José Francisco Peña Gómez and for the Second International Song Festival of the Dominican Republic the monumental piece Enriquillo . He was honored with the Order al Mérito de Duarte, Sánchez y Mella , the highest distinction of the Dominican government.
