The Ökumenische Gymnasium zu Bremen (ÖG) is a privately owned gymnasium located in the Bremen district of Oberneuland , in which grades 5 to 12 are taught throughout. The school was founded in 1981 by the German educator Erika Opelt-Stoevesandt .
history
Since 1950 Erika Opelt-Stoevesandt was in the Bremen school service, u. a. until 1964 as director of studies, deputy director of the grammar school at Leibnizplatz and from 1964 head of the grammar school at the Kleine Helle as senior studies director . The politicization of teachers and schools in Bremen in the 1970s bothered them as well as the lack of religious education in Bremen.
From 1972 she campaigned for the establishment of a private grammar school with an ecumenical orientation. In 1974 she published thoughts on the establishment of an ecumenical high school in private ownership and the integration of physically handicapped students . In 1981 she founded and directed the Ecumenical Gymnasium (ÖG), a private Christian school in Bremen-Oberneuland. This led to political disputes with the Bremen Senate. The ÖG provides a Christian education profile as well as a comprehensive general education in traditional grammar school subjects. Erika Opelt-Stoevesandt also campaigned for inclusion at her school, i.e. for the integration of physically handicapped children. The founding director of the ÖG helped out wherever work at the school was necessary. In 1978 the Friends and Patrons of the Ecumenical High School was founded , from which the Erika-Opelt-Stoevesandt-Foundation developed in 2006 . In 1987 she retired. In 1988 the Abitur of the ÖG was officially recognized.
In 1984 the school grounds were expanded to include the newly built sports hall with an integrated theater stage , which has since served as an auditorium .
Admission criteria
Particularly gifted people, siblings of pupils who have already registered, the physically handicapped and children with increased health needs are preferred.
financing
The school receives a subsidy from the city of Bremen to cover the costs incurred in running the school.
Debt money is also charged. The amount is staggered depending on the number of registered students in a family at the ÖG.
The Erika-Opelt-Stoevesandt-Foundation awards scholarships to talented schoolchildren whose families cannot afford the school fees. There is thus the possibility of a reduction or a complete waiver of school fees.
Aerospace upper level profile
On the initiative of the Bremen University of Applied Sciences , the Aerospace Upper School Profile (GymProLuR) was set up in Bremen in 2006. This is a cooperation between the IAT - Institute for Aerospace Technology at the University of Bremen, the Vegesack high school and the Ecumenical High School. The aim is to impart mathematical, physical and economic knowledge to students in the upper secondary school level and to establish references to the aerospace industry, which is particularly popular in Bremen. In addition, an international reference is established by teaching a technical vocabulary and discussing technological developments in English lessons.
The pupils work on interdisciplinary teaching projects that aim to promote different skills. The responsible persons place great value on teaching teamwork, independent thinking as well as methodological competence and presentation skills. In particular, professors and employees of the IAT supervise the students' laboratory tests and give lectures on the work of the institute and current research projects. In addition, the aerospace companies in the area are visited as part of excursions and internships as part of the lessons.
In addition, the pupils have the opportunity to do their project work as part of the Abitur as part of the aerospace upper school profile. It is possible to carry out experimental projects in cooperation with the University of Bremen.
Partnerships
International partner schools
The ÖG maintains exchange programs with schools in Europe, the USA and Australia. In addition to the Anthony J. Dimond High School in Anchorage , Alaska, this also includes the German School Madrid , with which an exchange project has existed since 1987, the private Scotch College for boys and the Korowa Anglican Girls' School for girls in Melbourne , Australia. In France, the Ecumenical Gymnasium has held exchange meetings with the Collège St. Léon , a Catholic private school in Nancy , since 2004 .
National partner school and other partnerships
There are partnerships across Germany. In particular, the sister school of the ÖG, the Ecumenical Cathedral Gymnasium Magdeburg , should be mentioned.
