School description

School program

In 2007 a school program was presented on the models and principles of the school, the work priorities and goals, the work programs, the advanced training and the evaluation . Project lessons, group work, interdisciplinary and self-organized learning are the working forms of the school. The languages (English, French, Latin and Spanish), arts subjects, social science subjects as well as mathematics and natural sciences form four equally important pillars of school life.

The school is an all-day school . Since the 2015/16 school year, the Dalton school system was initially only introduced in grades 5 to 8 and 10 and later extended to all classes, in which a third of the lessons consist of independent learning hours in which the students decide which teacher they go and the learning plan of which subject they want to work on.

The intermediate level

The intermediate level has five classes and around 650 learners (as of 2019).

There are two or sometimes three cooperation classes per class level, each of which cooperates with a class of the support center for perception and development promotion.

As a second foreign language from grade 6 you can choose between Spanish, French and Latin.

Offers for the elective area for grades 8 and 9 are:

  • Computer science, art, politics
  • Art, music, performing games
  • Social studies as an integrated subject from geography, history, politics and economics
  • Junior engineer academy: mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry.
  • The three ??? (Promote): Maths, English and German

In grades 5 to 10 there are courses for the subjects of performing games as well as art and music. In the natural sciences, lessons are given in half groups in some grades.

The class management in the intermediate level takes place in teams of two.

For the 8th grade there is an “internship exchange”, and in the 9th grade the subjects of work studies and social studies and an internship is carried out.

The upper school

The upper level consists of five classes and has around 250 learners (as of 2019).

The Vegesack high school is the upper level location for Bremen-Nord for the major subjects French and music as well as for the basic subject Latin.

history

The Vegesack Gymnasium also developed from the Gerhard Rohlfs Gymnasium .

School before founding

After Vegesack had been elevated to a patch in 1794 , an economic boom followed with the expansion of the port. In 1823 an evangelical uniate church school was established and in 1827 the class for language teaching began as a Latin school at what was then a two-class elementary school . In 1829 the new school building was built on the corner of Breite Strasse and Oststrasse (today Kirchheide). Until 1840, 11 to 26 students were taught by one teacher in the upper school class. Many students left school after their confirmation . However, an increasing number of students continued their education at the grammar school in Bremen . Around 1858 the church school developed into a higher middle school with four to five classes and with a headmaster and four teachers, two of whom had a university education . In 1863 the elementary school was separated from the citizen school.

School establishment

In 1869 the Second Order Secondary School was founded . With that, Vegesack had its first high school. The school had 126, then around 150 students and has been teaching Latin since 1869. In 1874 it was expanded into a secondary school of the first order . In 1882 the school was named Realgymnasium zu Vegesack . In 1892 it had 135 students in nine classes from Septima (pre-class) to Prima.

1899 to 1945

In 1899 the Frankfurt curriculum was introduced, with French as the first foreign language, Latin and English. The number of students grew from around 140 to 150 at the turn of the century to 270 to 292.

In 1919/20 the number of pupils was 244. The Realgymnasium and the Vegesack Lyceum acquired the Badenstedt school camp near Zeven around 1932 . These higher schools were named secondary schools in 1937. In 1938 this school was named Gerhard Rohlfs School, High School for Boys .

1945 to 1976/77

In early 1946 this school was cleared by the American military government . The Gerhard Rohlfs School was operated again. The high schools was, as from grade 7 grammar school branch D called. The Gerhard Rohlfs School traditionally established the modern language and the mathematical and scientific branches.

In 1949 there were 505 students in 16 classes and 24 teachers at the school; In 1955 there were 540 students.

The Gerhard-Rohlfs-Gymnasium , which has been known as this since 1957, introduced coeducation , i.e. boys and girls going to school together. In 1957/58 there were 650 students in 22 classes at the school and in 1958/59 there were already 749 students in 25 classes, 113 of them girls.

The number of students rose steadily: in 1967 there were 1145 students in 41 classes, including 427 girls. Emergency accommodation in the local office , in youth homes and in six mobile construction classes had to be set up. To relieve the school situation in Bremen-Nord, the Blumenthal high school was established in Bremen- Blumenthal from 1967 onwards , and from 1970 onwards it accepted more than 1,300 students.
