De fofftig Penns were a hip-hop and electro formation from Bremen-Nord , whose texts were written exclusively in the Low German language. The members Malte Battefeld ("Riemelmeester Malde"), Jakob Köhler ("Kommodige Jaykopp") and Torben Otten ("Plietsche Torbän") now live in Berlin and Hamburg . By combining the musical styles of electro and hip-hop with the language of their grandparents , they are considered to be the founders of Low German electro hip-hop.

history

Founded in 2003 as a pure fun project during their school days, De fofftig Penn ( High German : Die fifty Pfennige ) have only been performing live since 2009, mostly in northern Germany . The name was inspired by the American rapper 50 Cent , whose hit PIMP in the form of a satirical cover version was the basis of the band's first song.

For their songs, the group mainly uses instrumentals by well-known artists such as Nachlader , Egotronic , Mediengruppe Telekommander , Saalschutz or Supershirt . De fofftig Penn often met with great approval from the musical authors.

In addition to occasional appearances in the opening act of various bands, the group went on tour for the first time in spring 2010 . In September 2010 the band toured schools in Lower Saxony . In addition, De fofftig Penns were the Low German participants in Liet International , a music competition for the regional and minority languages ​​of Europe , in the Frisian city ​​of Leeuwarden in October 2009 .

In November 2010, Platt , the band's first single, was released as an online release on the BoingBoingRecords label by Berlin musician Nachlader .

In 2012 the band was honored with the Heinrich Schmidt Barrien Prize for their commitment to the Low German language.

De fofftig Penns took part in the Bundesvision Song Contest 2013 for Bremen with the song Löppt and took seventh place. Dialektro , the band's first album, was released the next day . In autumn 2014 the EP Een Vun De Fofftig Penn was released .

In autumn 2016 the band released a Low German version of the song An der Nordseeküste by Klaus and Klaus . The original interpreters contributed the Low German refrain to the new version.

In April 2018, the band announced their breakup at the end of the year. In December 2018 the best of Dat läppert sik was released on CD and vinyl with some new songs. On December 23, 2018, the band's last concert took place in the sold out Pier 2 in Bremen. Chefboss , Klaus and Klaus , Flo Mega , Grossstadtgeflüster , Grillmaster Flash, Joco , Tjalf Hoyer ( Afterburner ), SLAMA and the shanty choir Grambke appeared as guests .
