Afterburner (own spelling: AFTERBURNER) is a rock band made up of Bremen musicians since 1996, founded in Osterholz-Scharmbeck near Bremen , whose normal program is predominantly English-language cover versions , which are based on hits from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, interpreted and has thus already occurred throughout Germany as well as in Switzerland.
A special focus of the band is their musical commitment as an avowed supporter of the Werder Bremen football club , in the course of which they have published several recordings with specially written Werder songs since 2004 or participated in such.
history
Afterburner was founded in June 1996 by Patrick Dost, Tjalf Hoyer, Wilhelm Kandt, Stefan Mahlstedt, Eric Schloen and Ulrich Wortmann. In 2009 the line-up on the three string instruments changed, since then Maximilian zur Jacobsmühlen and Felix Weidenhöfer have been part of the permanent formation. In 2018, Gunnar Segelken was replaced on bass by Sebastian Ascher.
Afterburner appears mainly in clubs, at town festivals and festivals and has shared shows with the bands Status Quo (2003), Uriah Heep (2004), The Sweet (2005), Manfred Mann's Earth Band (2007), The Hooters (2010), SAGA (2011) and Stereolove (2013) as well as the artists Roger Hodgson (2012), Chima (2013), Cassandra Steen (2013) and Andreas Kümmert (2016).
With the Christmas concert series "Burning Christmas" the band established a successful tradition in 1997, in which numerous bands and musicians from the Bremen region such as B. De fofftig Penns , Kleinstadthelden , Grillmaster Flash or Johannes Strate have performed.

Status as a Werder band
Afterburner has been referred to several times as the “Werder Band” by moderators and stadium speakers such as Christian Stoll or Arnd Zeigler, as well as those in charge of SV Werder Bremen . The song Wir sind Werder Bremen stands out from the inventory of their Werder songs - an interpretation of the 1960s hit Daydream Believer by The Monkees , which was provided with a German text and which addresses Werder's 2004 double season and essential characteristics of the club and was released in 2004 on the A45 Music label. In 2005 the band played on the occasion of the Champions League kick-off of the 2005/2006 season in the run-up to the Werder Bremen vs. FC Barcelona their first of four appearances so far in Bremen's Weserstadion, since 2006 Afterburner has been a regular guest at the annual major event "Werder's Day of Fans". Singer Tjalf Hoyer also supported the group De fofftig Penns in a successful Werder song in Low German that was released in 2014 . In December 2014, Afterburner played with a reduced cast in the upper festival hall of the Bremen town hall in front of prominent guests of honor on the occasion of the official farewell to ex-Werder president Klaus-Dieter Fischer , who later added the refrain of a song dedicated to him to the title of his book publication “You are Werder Bremen ”made. When the band performs in the Werder context, the musicians sometimes refer to themselves as "Ewergreens" according to their Werder album and are then often dressed like a soccer team in jerseys, shorts and socks specially provided by SV Werder. Since episode 4 (guest: Claudio Pizarro ), one to three musicians of the band have formed the musical accompaniment of the Werder.TV production Werder Up'n Swutsch with the presenter Lou Richter . At the penultimate home game of the 2015/16 season, Afterburner performed together with the former Werder professionals Jonny Otten and Wynton Rufer as part of the #greenwhitewonderwall fan campaign in front of the Weserstadion.
Afterburner contributed two songs to the double album Lauter Werder , which was released in 2019 , with Wunder See and Wir sind Werder Bremen .

Afterburner and individual members of the band have had several benefit concerts and social initiatives since the band was founded. a. the Werder Bremen Foundation. Singer Tjalf Hoyer has been an ambassador for the club's CSR brand since 2013, along with public figures such as Matthias Brandt , Wigald Boning and Thomas Schaaf . a. for an aid project in Africa to Kilimanjaro climb.
