Versengold is a German folk - band from Bremen with more modern folk elements. The songs and the lyrics are self-written. Eight studio albums and two live albums have been released since the band was founded.
history
Versengold was founded in 2003 in the hometown of singer Malte Hoyer, Osterholz-Scharmbeck near Bremen . The band, which was founded as a hobby project, consisted of the founding duo Carolin Fährmann and Malte Hoyer, who at that time also played cister and hurdy-gurdy , supplemented by percussionist Jan Schröder and violinist Arndt Rathien. In terms of content and music, the quartet aligned itself with the LARP and medieval scene. On October 14, 2005, the debut album Hoerensagen was released . On the second album Allgebraeu , released on April 15, 2006, Thomas Heuer could already be heard as a guest musician. Jan Schröder and Arnd Rathjen left for the 2008 season and the album Ketzerey was recorded on May 21, 2008 with percussionist Thomas Heuer and violinist Alexander Willms. After completing the album and at the start of the 2008 season, Carolin Fährmann also left the band, the female soprano was subsequently replaced by guest musicians Martje Saljé (vocals and guitar) and Maren-Mechthild Meyer-Wünsch (vocals, cister, flutes, bodhrán) occupied. The three remaining band members Hoyer, Heuer and Willms therefore decided to break up the band and produce one last album as an all-male trio. During the production, Florian Janoske and Daniel Gregory joined as guest musicians in 2011. With this line-up, the band released the album Dreck am Stecken on January 18, 2011 . Janoske and Gregory then became full band members and the band continued to play as an all-male quintet.
The band became more professional over the years and the style also changed, first towards Celtic elements, later rock and folk moved more into the center. Versengold performed at the Wacken Open Air 2013, immediately afterwards on August 4, 2013 the album Im Namen des Folkes was released . On August 31, 2013 Versengold played together with Die Kammer , Lyriel and Fiddler's Green as opening act for Schandmaul in front of 10,000 visitors.
In 2015, Sean Lang joined the band on drums and Eike Otten on bass. The album Zeitlos , released with this line-up on July 31, 2015, entered the German album charts at number 22 and was then presented on an associated club tour. In addition to a renewed appearance at Wacken Open Air, the bands played at other festivals , including Summer Breeze , Rockharz , M'era Luna Festival , Open Flair and Greenfield . In the same year the band released their first live album Live 2015 . The DVD Live in Hamburg , recorded in 2015 in Gruenspan in Hamburg and containing a guest contribution by Katja Moslehner ( Faun ), was only released in 2016 .
In 2017 the album Funkenflug was released , which reached number 2 in the German album charts, which is the band's greatest success to date. In the same year Thomas "Pinto" Heuer left the band. On October 26th and 27th 2018 Versengold celebrated their 15th band anniversary with two concerts in Hamburg in front of 3500 visitors in the Große Freiheit 36 , in which a number of guest musicians such as Schandmaul and Subway to Sally also took part.
repertoire
The texts written by Malte Hoyer often tell stories with many different interpretations. The repertoire ranges from pure instrumentals to drinking songs (e.g., Eineley or Hoch die Stein ), ballads such as Vom Zauber des Wildfräuleins to socially critical songs, such as punch instead of putsch .
Trivia
Singer Malte Hoyer, Florian Janoske and Daniel Gregory also make music with the band Knasterbart .
Tjalf Hoyer, the brother of singer Malte Hoyer, is the singer of the Bremen band Afterburner .
Versengold has appeared in the computer game Die Gilde 2 since 2014 ; the band plays three of their songs in different inns. The patch enables the minstrels "Versengold" to have three of their songs a guest appearance in some inn or a bar every now and then.
The album Zeitlos is heavily influenced by Hoyer's previous, serious car accident.
On July 19, 2017 Versengold organized a live streaming concert together with Schandmaul and Mr. Hurley & Die Pulveraffen , in which each band covered a song of the other two .
On September 10, 2017 the band performed at the ZDF television garden .
Eike Otten also appears as Purple Otten.
On May 23, 2020, July 11, 2020 and August 21, the band, which could not perform live due to the Corona crisis, hosted online live concerts.
