The Guild 2 is a computer game from the genre of economic simulations and the successor to the game The Guild and thus of The Fugger II . It was developed for Windows by the German company 4HEAD Studios and published by the Austrian publisher Jowood in September 2006.

Gameplay

The guild is an economic simulation in a 3D world calculated in real time. It is located in Germany in the 15th and 16th centuries. In one of the cities of Augsburg , Berlin , Dresden , Hanover or Cologne , the player should found a powerful dynasty and gain political influence. As the actual head of the family, he determines the fate of his family over several generations and has to assert himself against competing dynasties. The aim is to be the most powerful citizen of the city at the end of the game. The game itself takes place in rounds, but the player is under a certain time pressure, as there is a time limit for each round. The player can choose a profession for each family generation. You can choose from various craft professions (e.g. blacksmith , carpenter ), commercial activities (trader, moneylender), but also the professions of thief, robber , guardsman and preacher .

Due to the aim of the game, the game is divided into several parts: On the one hand, the player has to coordinate daily work processes, e.g. B. the management of the company's own businesses. On the other hand, the player also has to take care of family matters. These include B. courtship in terms of a clever marriage policy and the promotion of the development of children. But political activities are also important. Offices at the city and state level can be achieved, not least through the purchase of offices and corruption . In the battle for supremacy, both the player and the competing families can resort to charges , threatening letters , pamphlets , sabotage and other means.

The Guild 2 stands out compared to its predecessor mainly by the increased importance of the private life of the individual characters who are capable of many interactions. Here, the characters and their actions are dealt with more, which gives the game the character of a life simulation .

The motto that promotes the game is "Take action and draw the consequences". In addition, the game includes a larger selection of professions, a larger game world, more detailed graphics and improved artificial intelligence .

development

The retail version was burdened with many bugs (in particular game crashes and defective game saves), which were not yet fully resolved for the main game in Patch 1.2. In August 2008 the final patch 1.4 was released for the main game, which, in addition to new features such as guild houses, fixed some, but not all, serious bugs almost two years after its release . The final patch 2.2 for The Guild 2: Pirates of the Hanseatic League , The Guild 2: Gold Edition , The Guild 2 version from The Guild - Universe Edition and The Guild 2: Royal Edition was released on May 7, 2010.

reception

The game received mixed ratings ( Metacritic : 61 out of 100 / GameRankings : 61.78%).

Extensions & versions

Pirates of the Hanseatic League

With The Guild 2: Pirates of the Hanseatic League ( version number 2.0) the game has been expanded to include the hospital and fishery building types. In addition, new actions were introduced into the game.

Bundle offers

On August 31, 2007, Die Gilde 2 Gold was released , which includes the main game and the add-on pirates of the Hanseatic League . All previously published titles in the series, i.e. Die Gilde and Die Gilde 2 with their respective add-ons, were launched in July 2008 under the name Die Gilde Universe . On July 25, 2008, The Guild 2: The King's Edition was released , which, in addition to the main game The Guild 2 and the add-on Pirates of the Hanseatic League, also contains new maps and patch 2.1.

Venice

A stand-alone expansion for The Guild 2 called The Guild 2: Venice hit stores on October 10, 2008. This includes the city of Venice, a completely new building style and some minor innovations. Fans reacted to this add-on with harsh criticism because, in addition to new bugs, they didn't like the new buildings and textures, among other things. In addition, the lack of a multiplayer mode (available in The Guild 2 ) in Venice was another point of criticism.

Renaissance

A team from the German Die-Gilde -Community set itself the task of bringing Die Gilde 2 closer to Die Gilde . The result was the fan add-on The Guild 2: Back to the Roots (ger .: Back to the roots ). Among other things, it expanded the game with two new professions, that of the necromancer and that of the moneylender, as well as 43 new products and a variety of promotions that should contribute to the atmosphere of the game. With over 200,000 downloads and as an insert on DVD booklets from print magazines, the game met with great interest. Therefore, plans arose for a second version of the fan extension ( Back to the Roots 2 ). It was introduced in December 2008 as The Guild 2: Crafts, Splendor & Lazy Magic and merged in June 2009 with another fan expansion called The Guild 2: Rise of the Patricians , which was just being developed at the recently founded Runeforge Game Studios. The new title of the expansion has since been The Guild 2: Renaissance and was originally supposed to appear in autumn / winter 2009, but has been postponed several times.

On May 10, 2010, JoWooD announced by press release that the company wanted to publish The Guild 2: Renaissance as an official add-on that would run without the main program. This gave the Runeforge team access to the source code of the main program and existing developer tools. Renaissance finally hit the market on July 27, 2010. However, The Guild 2: Renaissance turned out to be afflicted with quite a few errors ( bugs ). Patch 4.1 was released at the same time as the release and corrected a number of errors. Since then, the team has been working on additional patches on a voluntary basis.

Four years after the release and after the manufacturer's support temporarily stopped, the remaining members of the now defunct Runeforge team called on the players to work on a final 4.2 patch. Work on it was completed on December 22, 2014. The patch not only fixes numerous bugs, but also adds new content. In addition, the German band Versengold now has performances in the game's taverns.

The current patch version is 4.21 (from July 20, 2015), as well as the associated hotfix 4.211, there is also a current modification and a modding community that is still active.

With The Guild 3 , a sequel to the game series was announced, which was released in early access in 2017 .
