The Guild (international title Europa 1400: The Guild ) is a computer game published in 2002 by the game developer 4HEAD Studios for Windows . It is a business simulation and a spiritual successor to The Fugger II . The game received a successor title in 2006 with The Guild 2 , and there are other offshoots.

Game description

The guild is an economic simulation in a 3D world calculated in real time. It is located in Germany in the 15th and 16th centuries. In one of the cities of Augsburg , Berlin , Dresden , Hanover or Cologne , the player should found a powerful dynasty and gain political influence. Over several generations, he determines the fate of the family and has to assert himself against competing dynasties. The aim is to be the most powerful citizen of the city at the end of the game. The game itself takes place in rounds, but unlike in Die Fugger 2 , the player is under a certain time pressure, as there is a time limit for each round. The player can choose a profession for each family generation. You can choose from various craft professions (e.g. blacksmith , carpenter ), commercial activities (trader, moneylender), but also the professions of thief, robber , guardsman and preacher .

Due to the aim of the game, the game is divided into several parts: On the one hand, the player has to coordinate daily work processes, e.g. B. the management of the company's own businesses. On the other hand, the player also has to take care of family matters. These include B. courtship and promoting the development of children. But political activities are also important. Offices at city and state level can be reached. In the battle for supremacy, both the player and the competing families can resort to charges , threatening letters , pamphlets , sabotage and other means.

In terms of multiplayer mode, the game was immature. Numerous errors prevented simple games on the Internet. Support from JoWood was discontinued just a few months after the add-on was released.

extension

In 2003 an add-on called Jugglers, Crypts and Guns was released . It expands the main game to include the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg and three professions, that of tailor , juggler and cemetery keeper. In addition, politics was expanded to include the imperial level. The offices of emperor and pope cannot be obtained.

reception

The game received mostly positive ratings ( Metacritic : 82 out of 100 / GameRankings : 78.83%).

Sequels

The Guild 2

The sequel to the game appeared in September 2006 and is characterized above all by the increased importance of the private life of the individual characters. Here, the character and their actions are dealt with more. The motto that promotes the game is "Take action and draw the consequences". In addition, compared to its predecessor, the game includes a larger selection of professions, a larger game world, more detailed graphics and improved artificial intelligence . However, the retail version was also burdened with many bugs that were never fully resolved despite several patches.

In 2007 Jowood published the add-on Seeräuber der Hanse , with which the main game was expanded by some functions, and in 2008 the stand-alone Venice , which is set in the eponymous Italian trading city. In 2010, JoWooD also officially published The Guild 2: Renaissance, which was originally started as a fan extension by Runeforge Game Studios, as a further, stand- alone add-on.

Guild 1400

In 2009 Gameforge published the browser game Gilde 1400 , which is based on the series of games. However, the game was shut down on September 24, 2012 due to falling player numbers.

The guild DS

In April 2009 RTL interactive published the Nintendo DS game Die Gilde DS , which was developed by Independent Arts. The biggest difference to the original is that the game no longer runs in real time, but in rounds.

The Guild 3

At GamesCom 2014 , the third part was announced, which is being developed by GolemLabs. The engine of the Darksiders series should serve as the basis for the game engine . The game, the release of which was planned for September 2017, was only released on September 26th of that year as an early access version on Steam and Gog.com, the finished version, however, should not be available in stores until the 2nd quarter of 2018.
