Josef Rust

Josef Rust (born November 12, 1907 in Blumenthal (Bremen) ; † July 5, 1997 in Kassel ) was a German lawyer, political official and State Secretary (CDU).

biography

Family, education and work

Rust was the son of a school principal. From 1926 to 1929 he studied law and political science at the University of Göttingen , the University of Munich and the University of Berlin . He received his doctorate as Dr. jur.

Ministerial bureaucracy

He then became an assessor in the legal department in the Reich Ministry of Economics and he remained in the ministerial bureaucracy. He later became head of department in the credit department and was senior government advisor in the Reich Ministry of Economics during the Second World War and, as a senior military administrator, head of department in Alfred Rosenberg's Reich Ministry for the occupied eastern territories .

After the war, Rust worked as a farmhand for a farmer and was a lawyer in Oldenburg . In 1948 he was hired as a senior councilor in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Finance .

In 1949 he moved to the Federal Chancellery . As a ministerial advisor, he became head of the Chancellor’s Office and in this role accompanied Chancellor Konrad Adenauer on various visits abroad.

In 1952 he became head of the mining department (III) in the Federal Ministry of Economics and was promoted to ministerial director , he skipped the level of ministerial director. From 1955 to 1959 he was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Defense and thus representative of Defense Minister Theo Blank and from 1956 of Franz Josef Strauss . During this time he was largely responsible for the rearmament of the Bundeswehr . In the summer of 1959 he said goodbye. As State Secretary, Strauss replaced the "too little manageable" Rust with Volkmar Hopf .

In business

From 1959 he was chairman of the board of directors and from 1966 chairman of the supervisory board of the energy company Wintershall AG in Kassel . He was active on eight supervisory boards. a. from 1966 to 1974 as chairman of the supervisory board of Volkswagen AG . Rust was also chairman of the supervisory board of the Stumm group when it collapsed in October 1974 due to fraud.

Rust was a member of the CDU and a founding member of the CDU Economic Council .
Rust was a member of the Catholic student union AV Palatia Göttingen in the CV since 1926 .

  • Rust was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit with a star and shoulder ribbon.
