Ana María Shua

Ana María Shua (born April 22, 1951 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine writer.

Life

The Jewish-Arab ancestors of the Argentine author, who was born Ana María Schoua in Buenos Aires, come from Lebanon on her father's side and Poland on her mother's side (her family name was Szmulewicz) and immigrated to Argentina in the 1920s. Shua made her successful debut as a writer at the age of 15: In 1967 she published her poetry anthology "El sol y yo", which was also awarded by the Sociedad Argentina de Escritores (SADE). She studied literature at the Universidad de Buenos Aires and wrote some short stories for a women's magazine under the pseudonym Diana de Montemayor. At the age of 20 she started working for an advertising agency, for which she wrote advertising texts and folders.

When the junta, led by General Jorge Rafael Videla, came to power in 1976, Shua voluntarily went into exile. She settled in Paris and found a job in the editorial office of the Spanish magazine " Cambio 16 " there. While her sister stayed in exile in the USA and her cousins ​​in Spain, Ana María Shua returned to her home country after about a year and was able to publish her first novel ( Soy paciente ) in Buenos Aires in 1980 , which was used by the critics as a metaphor interpreted for the dictatorial regime. During this time she also changed the spelling of her surname to "Shua". She got to know the "microcuentos" (short stories) through the Mexican writer Edmundo Valadés and wrote her first own texts in this genre.

Some of her works have been translated into English, French, Italian, German, Polish and Dutch; two of her novels were made into a film: Soy paciente by Rodolfo Corral and Los amores de Laurita by Antonio Ottone in 1986.
