Child with massive edema (anasarca) due to malaria-related renal failure

An anasarka ( gr. Hydrōps ana sarka , above the muscles) is a non-inflammatory edema of the subcutaneous tissue .

The fluid is usually stored in soft tissues , for example in the back or on the flanks . Such edema often occurs in patients with right heart failure or who have increased fluid intake with reduced urine output ( oliguria ) or lack of urine output ( anuria ). It can also be observed in the event of a protein deficiency.

There is hypervolaemia within the blood vessels . This increases the hydrostatic pressure in the vessel; however, the oncotic pressure opposing the hydrostatic pressure is not. The result is increased filtration pressure. There is a transfer of fluid from the vessel into the surrounding tissue. The result is the above-mentioned edema.

Edema occurs not only in the soft tissues, but also especially in right heart failure in the stomach and the subsequent digestive organs, so that the absorption of drugs is disturbed; these must then be given parenterally .
