Athletic career

During his career as a weightlifter, Pyssarenko became three times world champion, four times European champion and set a total of 15 world records. However, he could never win an Olympic medal. In 1980 he was not nominated for the team because he was too young and in 1984 the Soviet Union boycotted the games. Both were initially banned from competition for life, but this was shortened to 3 years. With a body weight of only 125 kg, Pyssarenko was one of the lightest super heavyweights of his time.
