Anchimolios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anchimolios ( ancient Greek Ἀγχιμόλιος ) was a Spartan general . He was the son of Aster from a respected Spartan family.

In order to get rid of the unpopular tyrant Hippias , the Athenians had asked Sparta for help. However, since Sparta had good relations with the Peisistratides , this was rejected. For this reason the Alkmaionids paid the Oracle of Delphi to change the Spartans' minds. Whenever Sparta asked the Pythia for advice, it received the same oracle that asked it to liberate Athens. In 511, Sparta finally sent Anchimolios to Athens. He landed with ships in Phaleron . Hippias was not unprepared, however, as he was already informed of the attack. He had asked his friends from Thessaly for help, who provided him with a contingent of 1,000 horsemen under the command of the general Kineas . They also prepared the Plains of Phaleron so that they could use the cavalry effectively.

When the Spartan army went ashore and reached the plain, they realized too late that they were defenselessly exposed to the Thessalian cavalry. Many Spartans as well as their leader Anchimolios died. All others were pushed back onto the ships. Anchimolios found his final resting place in Alopeke near the sanctuary of Heracles Kynosarges .

It wasn't until 510 BC. In BC Cleomenes I succeeded in driving Hippias out of Athens.
