( Panzer , 1798)

Ancistrocerus gazella is a species from the order of the hymenoptera (Hymenoptera) within the solitary wasps (Eumeninae).

features

The wasps reach a body length of 7 to 12 millimeters. Their body is yellow-black in color. The second sternite is only slightly angled and not concave when viewed from the side. From below, its basal ribs are the same length. The sixth tergite is mostly colored black. The transverse edge on the first tergite has a flat bulge. It is difficult to distinguish the species from some other species of the genus Ancistrocerus , especially Ancistrocerus parietum .

Occurrence

The species occurs in North Africa and from southern Europe to central Sweden. It colonizes different habitats with sunny nesting opportunities, regularly also in the vicinity of humans ( synanthropy ). The animals fly in two generations from the beginning of May to the end of October. They are one of the most common solitary wasps in Central Europe.

Way of life

The females of Ancistrocerus gazella also fly in bad weather. They create their nests in cavities such as stems, cracks in walls, beetle holes, etc. Aisle diameters of 3.5 to 5 millimeters are ideal. Each nest usually consists of one to two, rarely three to four cells. Cells with females are significantly larger and are usually created in cavities with more space. The walls between the cells are built with a very fine, loamy mortar. A corridor area (attrium) is often created behind the end wall of the nest, which can be up to seven centimeters long. The brood is fed with the caterpillars of small butterflies . About 8 to ten days after laying the eggs, the larvae are fully developed and the stored food supplies are used up. They build a yellowish white cocoon , which consists of an outer and an inner shell. The outer cocoon is used to keep food residues and the excrement secreted before construction started away from the inner cocoon. The puppet rest is at least a month. The species is parasitized by the common gold wasp ( Chrysis ignita ) .
