Andō Hirotarō ( Japanese 安藤 広 太郎 ; born September 15, 1871 in Tamba ( Hyōgo Prefecture ); died October 14, 1958 ) was a Japanese agronomist.

Live and act

Andō Hirotarō graduated from the Agricultural Faculty of Tōkyō University in 1895 and began working at the Agricultural Research Institute (農 事 試 験 場, Nōji shiken-jo) of the then Ministry of Agriculture and Trade. With his research, influenced by the Danish botanist W. J. Johannsen , he made a significant contribution to improving rice cultivation. He also looked at the damage caused by cold weather or frost. In 1920 he took over the management of the research institute and remained its director for 21 years. At the same time he worked as a professor at his alma mater and at the Kyūshū University .

In 1950 Andō published his "Studies on the History of Rice Cultivation in Ancient Japan" (日本 古代 稲 作 史 雑 考, Nihon kojidai inasaku-shi zakkō).

In 1953 Andō was honored as a person with special cultural merits , in 1956 he was awarded the Order of Culture .
