And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street is a 1944 American partially animated short film directed by George Pal .

action

The boy Macro is told by his father to pay close attention to what he sees on his way to school. He should tell him on his return. On the way back, Macro remembers that he only saw a garbage truck pulled by a horse. In his mind, he turns the horse into a yellow and black zebra that is not pulling a garbage truck but a triumphal wagon. Soon the zebra and triumphal chariot become a reindeer with a sleigh, then an elephant, which at the end pulls a brass band in a large trailer. Finally the scene culminates in a large parade with a police escort and confetti rain.

Macro arrives at home. When his father asked what he saw, he replied that only a horse that was pulling a cart was seen.

production

And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street is based on the rhyming children's story And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street by Dr. Seuss , which is told word for word about the plot. Victor Jory and Rex Ingram can be heard as narrators . As early as 1943, director George Pal filmed a Seuss story in the same way with The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins .

The scenes of the way to and from school Macros were shot as a real film in black and white, whereby Macro only shows the lower body while running. Only the animated main sequence around the experiences that Macro imagines is colored. The scenes were animated in stop-motion , with George Pal's puppet-ons being staged. The film was first shown in the United States on July 28, 1944.

Awards

And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street was nominated in 1945 for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film ", but could not prevail against Tom Forms himself .
