Anders Franzén ( July 23, 1918 , † December 8, 1993 ) was a Swedish naval technician and amateur naval archaeologist . He became famous in 1956 by the rediscovery of the wreck of the year 1628 in the harbor of Stockholm sunken warship Vasa and their recovery between 1959 and 1961. He was also involved in the exploration and salvage operations at the ship Kronan , Resande Man , Riksäpplet and Lybska Svan .

Life

Franzen studied naval architecture at the Royal Technical University (KTH) in Stockholm , but did not graduate due to his strong interest in history. After working for BP for a while , he moved to the Swedish Ministry of the Navy, where he became an expert on oils and fuels.

At this time he began to search the archives for historical shipwrecks. From 1954 he concentrated his search on Vasa , which had sunk in the harbor basin of Stockholm , which he finally discovered in 1956.
