The Royal Technical University ( Swedish Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan, short KTH, English name KTH Royal Institute of Technology ) is a university in Stockholm and Sweden's largest technical university. A third of all Swedish engineers are trained at the KTH. In addition to the main campus on the northern edge of the city center, there are other campuses in Kista , Haninge and Södertälje .
history
The predecessor of the KTH was the Laboratorium mechanicum , which was founded on October 26, 1696 by Christopher Polhem . Since the training achievements were not satisfactory, a "mechanical school" with three teachers was founded in 1798, which was supposed to train in statics, mechanics and hydraulics, among other things. In view of the rapid industrialization in Germany and Austria, this solution did not last, so that King Karl XIV. Johan decided on May 18, 1825 to found a "Technological Institute". On June 8, 1826, the king stipulated in the statute that the institute should "impart skills and knowledge that are necessary for the successful operation of handicrafts and factories". In 1827 the KTH started operations as Teknologiska Institutet - and had a very strong application focus. This was supposed to cover the need for engineers that arose through industrialization. The focus was therefore less on the scientific basis than on the applied technology. But this focus was not without controversy right from the start. In 1877 the name was changed to Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan and the training became more scientific. In 1927 it was recognized as a university and the right to award doctorates.
PDC
The most powerful scientific computing center in Sweden, the PDC ( parallelldatorcentrum ), is operated on the university campus . Its services are used both by research groups at the university and by external parties.
Trivia
In February 2002, Bill Gates received an honorary doctorate from the university.
On September 4, 2013, then US President Barack Obama visited the university to find out about research on fuel cells, among other things.
