Andonios Liveralis ( Greek Αντώνιος Λιβεράλης or Liberalis Λιμπεράλης , Italian name Antonio Liberali ; * 1814 in Corfu ; † 1842 ibid) was a Greek conductor and composer of the early Ionian school .

Life

Liveralis was the son of the conductor Domenico Liberali and one of the first pupils of Nikolaos Mantzaros ; later he continued his studies at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella in Naples. When he returned to Corfu, he was happily accepted into the circle of 'national' composers of Corfu, where he was awarded a great talent. He worked primarily as an assistant to his teacher Mantzaros, which left him little time for his own compositions. He was one of the first teachers of his younger brother Iosif and worked as vice music director (Αντιπρόεδρος της Μουσικής) of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu (Φιλαρμονική Εταιρεία Κερκύρος).

Liveralis' compositions are largely limited to works of smaller forms. He wrote a series of festival and funeral marches that appeared in two volumes. The O kambouris march (Ο καμπούρης 'The Hunchback') became very popular in Corfu. He also devoted himself to composing piano music and creating a rich song repertoire. The composition of a one-act opera is the only reliably documented stage work by the composer.

Born a Catholic, Liveralis converted to the Greek Orthodox faith and took the patriotic name Eleftheriadis (Ελευθεριάδης). After his untimely death, he was buried in a splendid funeral to which the orchestra of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu played.
