André Goosse

André Goosse (born April 16, 1926 in Liège ; † August 4, 2019 ) was a Belgian Romance scholar and grammarian.

life and work

Goosse spent his childhood in Houffalize and graduated from high school in Stavelot . He studied from 1945 to 1949 at the Université Catholique de Louvain . In 1959 he completed his habilitation with Omer Jodogne with the publication of Jean d'Outremeuse, Ly myreur des histors. Fragment du second livre (années 794–826) , published Brussels 1965. In 1967 he became professor of Romance philology at the Université Catholique de Louvain (later Louvain-la-Neuve), in the same year a founding member and later president of the Conseil International de la Langue Française, 1976 member of the Royal Belgian Academy, her Secrétaire perpétuel from 1996 to 2001, since 1989 member of the Conseil Supérieur de la Langue Française en France. In 1991 he retired.

Goosse had been the son-in-law and confidante of Maurice Grevisse (1895–1980) since 1950 . In 1966 he took over the language chronicle of the newspaper La Libre Belgique from his father-in-law , after his death he took care of the famous grammar Le bon usage. Grammaire française (first in 1936), which he carefully introduced to modern linguistics in the 12th and 13th edition (1986, 1993) and in the 14th edition (2007).

After the death of his first wife, Goosse married the writer France Bastia in 1988.
