Maurice Grevisse [ mɔˌʁis ɡʁeˈvis ] (although the <e> has no accent, it is pronounced as if there was an acute acute there ) (* October 7, 1895 in Rulles , Province of Luxembourg ; † July 4, 1980 in La Louvière , Hainaut ) was a Belgian grammarian .

Maurice Grevisse

Life

Grevisse attended the normal school of Carlsbourg , where he received the teaching diploma in 1915. Then he moved to the normal school of Malonne and became a teacher of literature . He later became a French teacher at the École des Pupilles of the army in Marneffe . During this time he taught himself Latin and Greek . He later studied classical philology at the University of Liège . In 1925 he became a "Doctor of Classical Philology". In 1927 he became a professor at the École Royale des Cadets in Namur . In 1957 he retired.

Grevisse noticed that the grammar textbooks of the time did not meet his teaching requirements. So he collected his notes and summarized them in the manuscript of Le Bon Usage .

Many renowned publishers rejected this manuscript; In the end it was published by an unpretentious publisher from Gembloux in 1936. Duculot was founded and the work continued to be a success during World War II. André Gide , who wrote for Figaro , praised it as the best grammar book.

In 1971 Grevisse became an officer of the Legion of Honor . From 1967 until his death he sat on the International Committee for the French Language. His son-in-law André Goosse , also a grammarian, continued to revise Le Bon Usage , of which there are currently 16 editions.
