life and work

Kaup studied electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University , where he obtained his diploma in 1989. He then worked as a research assistant at the local Institute for Electrical Communication Technology and was awarded a Dr.-Ing. In 1995 with a thesis on models for region-oriented image description . PhD. From 1995 he worked at Siemens, initially as a project manager in the field of digital image communication in the Networks and Multimedia Communication specialist center, and in 1999 he switched to the area of advanced development of mobile multimedia applications. From 1997 to 2001 Kaup was also the head of the German MPEG delegation at ISO / IEC and deputy chairman of the DIN committee for multimedia and hypermedia information.

From 1999 to 2001 Kaup was also a lecturer at the Technical University of Munich . Since 2001 he has held the full chair for multimedia communication and signal processing at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . Since 2014 he has also been chairman of the ITG / VDE specialist committee "Image Communication and Image Processing" and a member of the VDE's scientific advisory board. He has been an IEEE Fellow since 2013 . From 2015 to 2017 he was Vice Dean of the Technical Faculty of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. In March 2018 he was elected a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Kaup's research focuses primarily on image and video signal processing, the coding of image and video data and multimedia communication. In the field of video signal processing and transmission, his main focus is on the development of algorithms for source coding of image and video signals, in particular of very high-resolution video signals, and the improvement of the quality of video signals received with interference. When it comes to signal processing, he mainly focuses on multi-camera systems. So far he is (co) author of over 350 scientific publications and (co) inventor of over 80 patents and disclosures.
