André Petermann

André Petermann (* 1922 ; † August 2011 ) was a Swiss theoretical physicist.

Petermann had studied mathematics with a diploma, specializing in distribution theory , and ECG Stueckelberg consulted him on a physical problem. He did his doctorate with him in Lausanne in 1953 ( La normalization des constantes dans la théorie des quanta ) and together they were then pioneers of the renormalization group . Immediately after it was founded in Copenhagen, Petermann was one of the first members of the theory group at CERN , at the time headed by Niels Bohr . He stayed in the theory group at CERN for the rest of his career.

In the 1950s, Petermann calculated the closest order (4th order in e, 2nd order in the fine structure constant) in the perturbation theory of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon , which was measured at CERN in the 1960s ( Georges Charpak , Richard Garwin , Francis Farley , Antonino Zichichi and others).

He was one of the first to develop the Quark model, for which Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig are best known for its introduction around the same time . Petermann's contribution ( Nuclear Physics , Volume 63, 1965, pp. 349-352) was submitted on December 30, 1963, but was not published until March 1965 (after the article by Gell-Mann) and was later forgotten. Gell-Mann and Zweig did not mention Petermann in their respective publications, and Petermann did not mention Gell-Mann or Zweig either, although he published relatively late and Zweig was his colleague in the theory department of CERN in 1963/64.
