Andrea Behrends (* 1966 ) is a German ethnologist .

Life

From 1987 to 1995 she studied ethnology (major), development sociology (minor), and urban and regional planning (minor) at the Free University of Berlin and the TU Berlin . From 1991 to 1992 she had a research association with the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana . In 1995 she obtained an MA in ethnology (very good). From 1997 to 1998 she had a research association with the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana. After completing his doctorate in ethnology in 2000 (magna cum laude): tightrope file. Women from Northern Ghana between education, work and social conventions, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology , Department I: Conflict and Integration from 2000 to 2006 . From 2000 to 2001 she did research with the University of N'Djamena . From 2006 to 2011 she was a scientific coordinator and researcher in a cooperative research project on “Traveler Models in Conflict Management”, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation , in connection with the seminar for ethnology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg . In 2007 she was a founding member of an anthropological research center in Chad (Center de Recherche en Anthropologie et Sciences Humaines, CRASH). In 2008 she was the team leader of a research project on the origins of violence, conflict mediation and reparation: a social anthropological study on Dar Sila (with Christine Pawlitzky, Babett Jànszky and Stephen P. Reyna), funded by the European Commission in Chad. She has been a member of the LOST research group since 2011. From 2012 to 2016 she was the project manager of a research project funded by the DFG on "Oil and social change in Niger and Chad". From 2013 to 2014 she was professor at the Institute for Social Anthropology at the University of Hamburg . From 2014 to 2015 she was a professor at the seminar for ethnology at the University of Halle an der Saale - Wittenberg . From 2016 to 2017 she taught as a visiting professor at the Institute for Cultural and Social Anthropology at the University of Vienna . From 2017 to 2019 she was a visiting professor at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Free University of Berlin ( Habilitation : Book manuscript Staying. Practices of displacement and emplacement in an African borderland (in English)). In 2019 she took over the professorship of African anthropology at the University of Bayreuth .
